Types Of Air Conditioners

With advancement of science and technology today the human civilization is in a position to make life comfortable in most circumstances. For instance, you have some task pending at the bank. Those days are gone when you needed to drive all the way for it. You can do it at home with clicks of a mouse. Similarly no matter how bad the weather is in your locality, be it hot or cold, you can enjoy a perfect temperature and humidity at home with air conditioners. The air conditioners are of different types. Choosing one will depend on the area and design of the house, local weather, the total heat generated inside the enclosed area, etc. Let’s take a look at the type of air conditioners.

 Window Air Conditioner

These are the most common form of air conditioners. They are usually fitted in the window sill or on the walls. They have the usual parts of an AC, viz. compressor, expansion valve, condenser, and evaporator coils. They are quite cost effective compared to other AC types available in the market. They are meant for single rooms and cannot cool large areas.

 Portable air conditioner

These offer more flexibility as they are mounted on wheel and can be moved from room to room as per need. These are compact units (usually 2' - 3' tall). The condensation is usually disposed through bucket or vented out through a hole or recycled through air. Although you move it from room to room you will need a hose of 3” to 5” in diameter which will connect to the air conditioner at one end and vent through a window, sliding door, wall or ceiling at the other end. These gadgets are great for room which does not have proper windows and doors, especially the server rooms. You can keep the server cooled over the weekends without turning the central office AC on.

Central air systems

Basically, a central air conditioner is either a split-system unit or a packaged unit. These are meant to cool large spaces.

Split Air Conditioner

These air conditioners as evident from their name are split into two units. The internal cabinet has the evaporator and cooling fan. The exterior cabinet has the compressor, condenser and expansion valve. An advantage offerd by this type of AC is they do not need you to make slots in the wall to fit them. They are also known for their aesthetic appeal. They can be used to cool one or more rooms. In case of more rooms there will be more internal cabinets according to the number of rooms. The units will be fitted to one external cabinet installed outside

 Packaged air conditioner

They are found in large hotels, motels, hospitals condominiums etc. In these systems the typical AC parts are present in one large cabinet. The room air is taken through the ducts and cooled in the unit and then thrown back by the high capacity blower. The cooled air then flows through the ducts laid through various rooms. Some packaged air conditioners can include electric heating coils or a natural gas furnace. This increases its functionality and will spare you the cost of buying separate furnace for winters.

The split systems are usually higher in efficiency than package units. Some split systems can be as high as 25 SEER while a package unit generally has 13 to 15 SEER.
